CITYSHOTS – Alkmaar

MONUMENT ALKMAAR

[:en]I am Dutch.

Born and raised in Schiedam, until we moved to Schaijk, a tiny village and the complete opposite of what I was used to.

Let me just say that living in a tiny little village like that made my city heart beat so loud, that I moved back to Rotterdam as soon as I got the chance.

I was 18, already got accepted for an internship in the nearest town near Schaijk, but my heart wanted more.

So, I moved to Rotterdam, worked in my hometown and basically didn’t look back.

After Rotterdam, I went to The Hague to study, back to my parents for a while, to Amsterdam for my bachelors degree and after 3 years, I ended up in Haarlem.

During my bachelors degree, I met one of my best friends who always lived nearby Alkmaar. We spent quite some time in Alkmaar and it felt so good that I almost moved there as well.

Just like Haarlem, Alkmaar has it all. Cute, little streets with a great sense of tranquility, but at the same time, everything you need is around the corner and you just feel the city pulsing.

Meanwhile, my friend moved to Alkmaar and when I visited her in December, I felt a new found appreciation for the city. For the first time I felt like a tourist in my own country. Overwhelmed by all of the historic buildings and quiteness of the town, I just have to take you with me on a little stroll through town.

OUDEGRACHT ALKMAAR

Oudegracht.

Total quietness, but within one street walking distance you can feel the city pulsing. This bridge, the cute houses, the harmony, peacefulness.
